Prof Maurice P Boland spent most of his working life in academia at University College Dublin (UCD), where he supervised almost 70 Masters or PhD students to completion.
He and his colleagues developed a procedure for non-surgical embryo transfer in cattle in the early seventies; the procedure is still widely used in commercial and research activities. Periods of sabbatical leave were held at the University of California at Davis, and at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Sydney.
He held many scientific and administration roles in UCD including Director of the UCD-Teagasc Partnership, and had various senior management roles in the College of Life Sciences and in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, including Dean and Vice President at UCD. He was an elected member of the UCD Governing Authority and the Finance Committee. He acted on many Selection committees both in UCD and externally including acting as Chair of the Panel to select the winner of the World Agriculture Prize. His research interests included embryo production (in vivo and in vitro) and establishment and maintenance of pregnancy in farm animals with a particular emphasis on dairy cattle. He has published extensively in peer reviewed international journals and has served on several international committees including President of the International Embryo Transfer Society and Vice-President of International Congress on Animal Reproduction and Artificial Insemination.
He joined Alltech as Research Director in 2013 after spending almost 40 years in Academic life in UCD and there he continued to use his research and academic knowledge to expand the role of research in that company. He retired from Alltech in 2018 and continues to provide consultancy support to a number of companies.
